Humanity’s Mid-Term Report: A Sobering Grade from Both Humans and AI

In an unprecedented experiment, researchers asked both human experts and artificial intelligence systems to independently evaluate the state of humanity—and the results are strikingly similar. The collective “report card” for our species is a C-minus, a grade that reflects deep concern about our trajectory but also hints at a path forward we already understand but fail to follow.

The grading process examined multiple dimensions: environmental stewardship, social equity, technological ethics, conflict resolution, and global cooperation. Humans gave an average score of 68 out of 100, while AI models—trained on vast datasets of human history and current events—returned a nearly identical 66. The convergence is not coincidental; both evaluators identified the same core issues.

The most damning marks came in categories of planetary health and inequality. Climate action earned a D-plus, with both judges noting that despite decades of warnings, emissions continue to rise. Economic disparity scored even lower, with the gap between the wealthiest and poorest widening faster than any solutions are implemented. Surprisingly, technological innovation received a B, but with a caveat: our ability to create outpaces our wisdom to govern.

The single solution that both human and AI evaluators highlighted is one we already know but struggle to practice: long-term thinking over short-term gain. From climate policy to geopolitical conflicts, the pattern repeats—we prioritize immediate comfort or profit over sustainable survival. The report suggests that humanity’s grade will not improve until we collectively choose delayed gratification, cooperation over competition, and humility over hubris. The answer is not a new invention; it is an old virtue we have yet to master.
