Former kings and queens behaved differently from you and me. They believed their status was a birthright, a divine order that placed them above the common crowd. Today, that same sense of entitlement shows up in less obvious ways. A person cuts in line, demands special treatment at work, or expects others to solve their problems without gratitude. Psychologists say entitlement is not just about being spoiled. It often comes from a mix of upbringing, personality, and social environment.
Children who receive constant praise without earning it may grow up believing they deserve everything. But the opposite can also happen. People who felt neglected or unfairly treated sometimes develop a defensive entitlement, a way to demand what they think the world owes them. Narcissism plays a role too. Those with a fragile ego often use entitlement as armor. They need to feel superior because deep down they feel small.
Culture matters. In some societies, hierarchy and status are baked into daily life. A person from a wealthy family might expect deference without question. In more egalitarian settings, entitlement can clash with community values. Social media also fuels the fire. Seeing curated lives of luxury and success makes some people feel they deserve the same, without seeing the work behind it.
Entitlement is not always bad. A healthy sense of self-worth helps people set boundaries and ask for fair treatment. The problem comes when it turns into a demand that others serve your needs. Understanding where it comes from is the first step to keeping it in check.
