What My Therapist Knew Never Reached My Med Check

What My Therapist Knew Never Reached My Med Check

For years, I saw two different doctors. One managed my prescriptions. The other managed my mind. The first asked about sleep, appetite, and side effects. The second asked about my childhood, my marriage, and the reasons I woke up afraid. They were both good at their jobs. But they never talked to each other, and that silence cost me.

My medication check was fifteen minutes long. That was the whole appointment. The doctor typed, glanced at a screen, and adjusted a dose. There was no room for the story behind the symptoms. No space to mention that my father had just died, or that I had stopped leaving the house. The psychiatrist who knew those things, the one who did the real therapy, wrote notes that went into a different file. That file never made it to the med check.

It was not just short. It was sealed. The system split my care into two separate boxes, and I was the only thing they had in common. I tried to bridge the gap myself. I printed summaries. I asked my therapist to write letters. But the med doctor did not read them. There was no time, and maybe no interest. The pill was the answer, and the pill did not care about my grief.

I understand the limits of a fifteen-minute visit. I understand that insurance and scheduling make it hard. But I also understand that a person is not a list of symptoms. The doctor who knew my life had insights that could have changed my treatment. Those insights stayed locked away. I am better now, but not because the system worked. I am better because I stopped expecting it to.
