Teaching Companies to Tell Stories With Data

Sienna Jackson has spent the last decade helping businesses move past spreadsheets and slide decks. Her work focuses on something surprisingly rare in the corporate world: turning raw numbers into narratives that people actually remember. In a recent interview, she explained why most companies fail at this and what they can do differently.

Jackson argues that data alone does not persuade anyone. A chart showing a sales dip is just a fact. But a story about a customer who almost left because of that dip, and the fix that brought them back, creates urgency and action. She calls this the difference between reporting and communicating. Too many teams hand over dense dashboards and expect executives to feel something. They won't.

The process, she says, starts with a simple question: what changed for the people we serve? From there, companies need to identify a main character, a conflict, and a resolution. That structure works for a quarterly review just as well as it does for a product launch. Jackson also warns against overloading narratives with every metric. Pick three or four numbers that matter and build the story around them.

She has seen the payoff firsthand. One client, a logistics firm, turned a dry operational update into a customer-focused story about delivery delays during a snowstorm. Engagement in their internal meetings jumped, and frontline staff started offering solutions instead of just listening. Another company used a data-driven story to win over skeptical board members on a new investment.

Jackson believes this skill is no longer optional. With remote work and constant distractions, attention is the scarcest resource in any organization. Data storytelling, she says, is how you earn it. The tools are not complicated. The discipline is. Start small, practice on real problems, and resist the urge to show everything. The story is the strategy.
