A new study has found that men who feel a strong sense of entitlement are three times more likely to consider "stealthing" -- the non-consensual removal of a condom during sex. Researchers from the University of Kent and the University of Western Australia surveyed over 1,000 men to understand the psychological traits behind this coercive behavior.
The findings, published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior, show that men who score high on measures of entitlement are significantly more likely to view stealthing as acceptable. The study also linked the act to psychopathy and narcissism. Men with these personality traits often prioritize their own gratification over a partner's consent and safety.
Psychologists explain that entitlement creates a belief that one deserves sexual pleasure on their own terms, regardless of the other person's wishes. This mindset can override empathy and respect for boundaries. The researchers emphasize that stealthing is a form of sexual assault, as it violates a partner's explicit agreement to use protection.
The study also found that men who endorsed stealthing were more likely to hold hostile attitudes toward women and to believe in rape myths. These findings highlight the need for better education around consent and the serious legal consequences of such behavior. The researchers hope the study will help inform prevention programs and legal reforms.
